Opinions of students, graduates and PhDs

Some years ago, the University initiated a self-assessment programme with the aim of analysing its ability to respond to the needs of different stakeholders, primarily its students. The level of student satisfaction is measured by specific online questionnaires that monitor the quality of the services delivered and identify appropriate corrective actions where criticalities emerge.

Concerning educational activities, we can see that overall, the level of student satisfaction in A.Y. 2018/19 and A.Y. 2019/20 remains stable, with 86 percent satisfied, while there is a slight improvement in A.Y. 2020/21, which sees the satisfaction level rise to 88 percent.

It should be noted that although the entire second semester of academic year 2019-20 faced the impact of the health emergency, which forced the University to rapidly organise online teaching, the level of satisfaction remained “stable”, a sign that the University was able to provide students with an adequate response in terms of teaching even during the critical situation. Both in 2018-19 and 2019-20, student satisfaction with examination procedures was high, with rates of 86% and 88%, respectively, irrespective of the result of the examinations themselves. For A.Y.2020/21, the percentage of satisfied also remains stable at 88 percent.

Satisfaction with the overall experience and the services offered is also on the whole generally positive. However, there is one figure for the academic year 2019-20 that shows a slight fall compared to 2018-19. A predictable effect of the consequences of the Covid-19 emergency in the second semester is the significant impact on overall university life, even if the management of the health situation was generally appreciated by the students. Slightly recovering, though still below 2018/19 values, was the level of satisfaction recorded in a.a.2020/21.

Regarding the satisfaction of undergraduate and doctoral students, the University uses the surveys conducted annually by the Almalaurea Consortium.
As can be seen, for the survey regarding undergraduates, the University of Trieste's data appears to be almost in line with those at the national level: slightly improving in 2020 compared to 2019 while remaining substantially stable in 2021. About 80 percent of undergraduates who graduated in 2020 and 2021 would enroll again at the University of Trieste (70 percent in 2021 would choose the same course again).
On the other hand, we can note a significant decrease in the level of satisfaction of PhD students in 2021: only 49% of respondents would choose the University again (compared to 68% in 2020). On the other hand, we can observe a significant increase in the share of doctoral students who would elect to pursue a doctorate abroad.
